Ampere Magnus Review & Range test | Worth Paying 1.05Lakhs?

I was wandering around to buy an electric scooter near the 1lakh price range and came across the Ampere Magnus EX. A decent number of people are purchasing this scooter; in December 2023, the Greves Ampere stood at 5 positions with almost 3000 EV units sold. So, this scooter would be worth trying. I visited my nearest Ampere showroom and rode the Ampere Magnus EX electric scooter for a whole day, did its actual range test and here’s my review about the Ampere Magnus EX electric scooter.

Meeting with the store owner:

First, I met with the store owner and talked about electric scooters and the chilling winter wave in Gurugram. By the end of the conversation, I asked the owner about the real-world conditions of the scooter. At first, he told me some unreal numbers, and after a decent debate, we ended up betting to achieve the mentioned numbers.

Ampere Magnus EX Riding Comfort:

The seating was comfortable, and the rider position was decent (not too good).

  • The handle grip was ok-ish, and the throttle bar was low-quality.
  • The footboard was comfortable and long enough for a 6 ft long person.
  • The pillion sitting is decent and may give a hard time if sitting for a long time.
  • The metal pillion support is something to appreciate.

Handle Features:

  • The button quality could’ve been improved. But it works!
  • The scooter’s handle has all the required features like high Beam, low Beam, horn, reverse mode switch on the right hand we can find, Kill switch, Indicators, Mode switch mode, etc.
  • The mode switch is one thing I was stunned by. The company has made a simple switch between high and low mode.

Digital Consol:

For 1 lakh rupees, I expect much more than just a small black & white fitted in front of me. The Ampere Magnus EX shows the Mode the scooter is in, current charging left, kilometres covered, and speed.

The visibility of the console is much lower on a sunny day, but it could’ve been improved.

We also see other pointers like side-stand alert, right-left indicator, and high-beam alert.

Ampere Magnus EX Riding the experience& Range test:

I started amid a fully shining sun and rode between Gurugram and Delhi. Initially, I started the scooter with the first mode, i.e. eco-mode, and the top speed in the first mode was disappointing, the scooter barely goes above 30 km/h.

So, while the Magnus EX was on the highway, keeping it on first mode was impossible, and I decided to switch to second mode. In the second mode, the scooter accelerated much faster in the second mode, but this time also, the scooter barely went higher then 45km/h.

While riding the scooter in the first mode the battery dropped by the rate of 1% per km.

Small talks with the co-riders:

The guy asked about the scooter’s ex-showroom price and riding cost. I could feel the helplessness on his face. The running cost of the scooter just blew the guy up.

Now, Continue with the ride.

After riding for 27 km towards Delhi, I returned to Gurugram while monitoring the battery performance. After riding the scooter for 70km, the battery dropped to 24%, and the scooter acceleration and top speed started feeling lacking.

After returning to the showroom, I handed over the sooty to the owner, and it performed just as expected.

  • The reverse mode makes parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces easier.
  • Keyless start allows riders to start the scooter without a key.
  • Anti-theft alarm helps to deter thieves.

Final Verdict:

Overall, the Ampere Magnus EX is fairly built with low performance, and, in my opinion, this scooter doesn’t satisfy the 1 lakh price point.

At 1 lakh, there are other scooters as well, like Ola S1 Air, Bounce Infinity, Hero Electric, etc. Which can be a far better option than this scooter.
