Ola Electric has been the apple of the eye of almost every EV user. It has excellent features, over-the-top specifications, and a user-friendly design. Although it lacks in the after-service part, the company claim to improve it over time. The charger is the most essential part of any electric vehicle, and with Ola Electric, many people have raised an issue with its chargers.

So, in this article, we’ll take a deep dive into Ola Electric chargers, see what charger specifications, features, and costs are, and look at some FAQs and troubleshooting of Ola Electric EV chargers.

Ola S1 pro portable charger:

Ola Electric provides a default EV charger along with the scooter, which you may call a portable charger. Here are its physical aspects:

  • It weighs around 2.5kg.
  • The dimensions of the charger are 28 x 16 x 14 cm.
  • The charger length is around 13 ft.
  • Plastic body.
  • And makes very low noise while charging.

After the physical aspects, let’s jump onto the technical aspects of the Ola S1 Pro EV charger.

So, on the Ola website, it says the charger uses ‘CAN’ communication, but what does that mean?

What is CAN communication? This is a communication protocol between the charger and the EV battery. CAN communication defines how the EV will be charged, i.e., charging speed, amps, kW, etc.

Power output: 700W/12Amp. Here’s what it means – a 700W charger can transfer 700Wh of electric energy into your battery, and 1000W is 1 unit of electricity. To understand layman’s terms, one can say, “A 700 W charger can transfer 0.7 units of energy into a battery in 1 hour”.

Charging time 4-6 hours: Now, let’s see how an EV charger’s specifications impact the charging time. The total energy storage capacity is 4000Wh, and an Ola portable charger can transfer 700Wh in 1 hour, so if we divide the energy capacity 4000Wh by the energy filled in 1 hour (700Wh), we can get the charging time, i.e. 4000Wh/700Wh = 5.7 hours. There, it’s the total charging time.

250V input voltage: It implies that the input voltage is 230V, equivalent to our home supply.

Ola portable charger Warranty:

The Ola charger comes as an accessory and not a part of the scooter, so it has a warranty of 6 months. After the warranty, you can buy the dedicated charger worth ₹ 15,000/- You can purchase it from Ola’s own website itself.

Ola Electric Hypercharge (Fast charger):

Ola Electric Hypercharge takes 45 min to charge the Ola S1 pro fully. Although the company didn’t disclose any robust specifications of their hypercharge, here are the calculated specifications from the charging time and range.

  • Ola’s real range is close to 150 km, and on the website, they claim the hypercharger can provide a 50km range in 15 minutes, so it should take 45 minutes for 100% charging.
  • Upon doing some calculations, we discovered that the hypercharger chargers the Ola S1 Pro at the rate of 5kW, i.e., transferring 5 units’ worth of energy in 1 hour.
  • However, after visiting the hypercharging station physically, we found out that they can operate at 12kW, i.e., it can transfer 12 units of electricity in 1 hour.

Understanding the connector:

Here’s what each port of the connector does,

COM 1&2: These are the ports for CAN communication. This communication protocol establishes a connection between the charger and the battery, sharing information like charging speed, amps and kWs.

Control Pilot: This tells the battery about the charger rating and how much demand the battery should make with the charger.

DC +ve & -ve: These two ports are used for DC fast charging; one is +ve, and another is -ve

Aux 1 & 2: These are the 2 ports used for regular household charging.
