Famous Tata EVs – Tata Nexon, Tigor, & Tiago

Introduction

Nowadays, it is quite common to spot Tata EVs cruising on Indian roads. They can be seen driven by private owners who employ them for everyday use, or they can often be seen driven by taxi drivers in cities and urban landscapes where cab services are in prevalent use. At this stage, Tata Motors has got a good grip on the EV sector in the country simply because its EV-dedicated division called Tata.ev has been releasing many variants of their iconic models since 2019. Tata claims that their EVs have been driven over 1.4 billion km, and their plan to increment this number is quite obvious given the fact that Harrier, Curvv, and Safari EVs are lined up for 2024. Now, with the recent unveiling of the Tata Punch EV in January 2024, Tata has brought the total number of its running models on the road to four. Let us have a look at their most iconic electric vehicles that, due to their pros or cons, have become quite familiar in the mind of the Indian public. Here’s a list of some famous Tata EVs:

Tata Nexon EV

All automobile lovers will be quite familiar with the original ICE-based Tata Nexon. Released in 2017, it was a crossover SUV, though its advanced design was reminiscent of the good old Tata Indica model. Tata released the electric version of the same in 2019, and it is often called Tata Nexon.ev or, simply, Tata Nexon EV.

Tata Nexon EV Specifications

It is a fully electric 5-seater automatic car with a driving range of 325 to 465 km and a battery capacity of 30 to 40.5 kWh.  As far as driving is concerned, Tata Nexon EV provides 3 driving modes:

City Mode: The Default Mode suited for city driving. This one maintains a balance between power and economy.

Eco Mode: The mode to go for when you desire maximum range.

Sport Mode: As the name suggests, the mode is best suited for expressway runs.

Tata Nexon EV Charging

The Tata Nexon EV hosts the CCS2 Charging Port and can be charged with a 7.2kW home charger that can charge a 40.5kWh battery pack from 10-100% in about 6 hours.

The green-plated Tata Nexon is fairly common on Indian roads and is well-suited for city and highway drives. The official range is 465km, but depending on how it is driven, the car can practically last about 270km. As with all new things,  its long-term reliability can’t be determined at the current stage, but with its impressive battery range and mechanics, the Tata Nexon EV can be a fun car to drive, especially in the sports mode.

Tata Tigor EV

Tata Tigor EV, released in 2019, is the electrified version of the subcompact sedan called Tigor, which was launched in 2017. It is a compact, well-optimized, and affordable vehicle that is commonly used by taxi owners in urban and suburban areas. Post its facelift, the vehicle was renamed to XPRES-T EV and is known as a budget-friendly car that is suited for city and everyday use. The XPRES-T.ev boasts  4 variants called XE, XM, XZ+, and XZ+ (O).

Tata Tigor EV Price

The average ex-showroom price of Tata Tigor EV ranges from INR 12.5 to 13.75 lakhs.

Tata Tigor EV Specifications

It is a 5-seater electric vehicle with a driving range of 315km, which takes 9.5 hours to charge and a battery capacity of 26kWh. The vehicle sports only two modes, namely: The Eco and The Sport mode. As with other models, the Eco mode puts range over power, while the Sport mode reveals the complete potential of the motor and can make driving a fun experience.

Tata Tigor EV Charging

Tata Tigor EV comes with a 15A portable charger that can charge up its 26kWh battery pack in about 6-7 hours. Its DC Fast Charger claims to go from 10 to 80 in 60m, though finding a working charger that’s available for use can be quite challenging for everyday users, given that the charging infrastructure is still at its adolescent stage.

Overall, the Tata Tigor EV is a budget-friendly and compact EV that’s suited reasonably well for city rides and everyday use. They can mostly be seen plastered with the brand logos of our favourite cab-providing apps and may prove to be the best vehicle for that quick trip to the airport.

Based on the 5-door petrol-based hatchback city car of the same name, the Tata Tiago EV was launched in 2022. It comes in  7 variants: XE Base, XT Base, XT, XZ Plus, XZ Plus Fast Charge, XZ Plus Tech LUX, XZ Plus Tech LUX Fast Charge.

The official driving range of the EV can go from 250 to 315km, and it sports a  battery capacity of 19.2 to 24kWh. Tata Tiago EV, like the Tigor, also has two driving modes, namely, the City and Sport Mode.

Tata Tiago EV Charging

Tata Tiago.ev Home Charging

A 15A EV Charger can charge its 24kWh battery in about 8 hours, and a 7.2kW AC charger can do the same job in about 3.6 hours. Comparatively, a DC Charger can boost its battery from 10 to 80 in 1 hour.

With a range of about 200km, the EV is well-suited for urban dwellers and casual city commutes.

Furthermore, its zero tailpipe emission and ambient motor sound can also appeal to environmentally-conscious users, making it a good alternative to traditional ICE-based vehicles.

The relatively low price of its variants makes the Tata Tiago EV one of the most affordable EVs in the country, though its low battery capacity creates long-distance anxiety among the users, and the prospect of making an overnight journey across the highway can even bring nightmares!

Conclusion

Tata Nexon, Tigor, and Tiago EV are 3 famous models of electric vehicles that are cruising on the Indian Roads. These flagship EVs from Tata Motors reveal the company’s vision to achieve their Net Zero and Zero Waste goals by 2040 and 2030, respectively. The continuous production of these modern electric vehicles enables EV adoption in the country, and their growing sales numbers show that EVs are on the rise. From 2019 till 2023, these three vehicles have become a staple name when it comes to EVs, and if numbers are to be believed, they are going to stay here for a long time.
